| 394 | OBIT (Red Bank Register, 14 Oct 1908): George S. Vanderhoef of Freehold Answers His Last Roll Call. George Stults Vanderhoef died last Wednesday at his home on Broad street, Freehold, at the age of 7G years. Mr. Vanderhoef waa born near New Brunswick and he went to Freehold when a young man. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in the army and became second lieutenant in Company E of the 29th regiment. On account of his bravery and efficiency he was later appointed first lieutenant. He was in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. For 25 years he was a member of Good Will hook and ladder company of Freehold, which was the original fire company of that town. For several years he was chief of the Freehold fire department. He was a member of the Freehold Methodist church. He leaves a widow and four children, Benjamin B. Vanderhoef and Miss Bertha Vanderhoef of Freehold, Mrs. Joseph E. Sherburne of Oceanport; one brother, Arthur Thompson of Englishtown, and two sisters, Helen Hafeman and Emma Wrobleski, both of Freehold; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
